Abstract

The history of online information retrieval is reviewed briefly, with a focus in the manner in which technological advances have stimulated the development of the online industry. Current technology is examined, as are applications and implications of the use of that technology in industry, government, and academic sectors worldwide. Emerging trends are overviewed, prospects for future development are analyzed, and the impact of these developments in the online industry areconsidered.
