Abstract

In studying and teaching the nature of library sources, focus should not be limited to technological development (printing, audiovisual products, electronic publication etc.) but should include sociocultural implications and environment. Document types that are not subjecl to bibliographic control play also decisive role. All elements of the complex interaction between users, systems and sources should be studied. The impact of new technology on the concept of "source" must also be considered. An important part of training is conducted in a real working environment. In the Birmingham Polyiechnic, the degree course in Librarianshipand Information Studies is four years in duration with the third year spenl entirely in the job in a library or information centre. This mix of study synthesizing theory and practice produces graduates wiih good theoretical understanding and strong practical skills.
