Equipment and furniture to meet the requirements of the new technology

Abstract

The author discusses three aspects of the implementalion and impacts of new technology in libraries, like personal computers, terminals, videos, optical disks, facsimile transmission etc. First, a brief description is given of the range of equipment currently in use and likely to become available in the next few years. It is followed by a discussion of the requirements on furniture for the most effective use and support of this equipment. Thirdly, the implicalions for the building services of the library are considered, particularly in relation with power, telecommunication, heating, ventilatíon and lighting. Some illustrative examples of library technology and furnishing of academic libraries in the United Kingdom are presented.
