Abstract

After a brief summary of information recording on magnetic media, the author overviews the basics of the optical information storage. He shows by using simple means how information recording and reading takes place on optical media, and how can higher information density on optical media than on magnetic media, be realized. The author presents the CD-ROM technology with 12 cm compact discs, the control mechanism of optical data recording and reading. the fundamentals of CD-ROM production and of CD-ROM players. A brief presentation of optical disc systems utilizing 12 inch discs is also given. The conclusion is that a growing use is expected of optical information storage and retrieval, especially of CD-ROMs, due to the elimination of telecommunication difficulties.
