Abstract

Three types of online accessible, publicly available databases for library and librarians' use, totalling about 200 in number, are discussed: library and information science bibliographic databases, catalogue databases of library holdings and of publications, and directory databases of online databases and information services. An overview of these library and information service related databases is accompanied by some illustrative examples of their use. It is shown that the application of online library databases or of their CD-ROM versions is preferred in many cases to manual catalogues. The more extensive use of computerized library systems in Hungary is recommended in several aspects of librarianship.
