On the future special libraries

Abstract

The author's conclusion, based on considerations of development trends, is that the special library of the future will be the reference library, the access library, the "everyday bread" library, the cooperating library, the transparent library, the cost-benefit library, and the multimedia library. These characteristics will prevail in combination rather than one by one, though with different shares in various libraries depending on the demands to or the functions of a particular library.
