The author investigates library and information activities in Hungary during the period when the country has been gradually overcoming former backwarness in various fields of social life. In 1957 the collection of libraries consisted of 40 million units; 29 million volumes were lended to 2,2 million regular readers. In the meantime the library holdings outnumbered the 100 million units; 3,6 million regular readers used 72,5 million documents. It is even more important that the quality of services has increased also significantly.
