Bildschirmrext, the teledata system of the Federal Republic of Germany - The individual users' aspect

Abstract

The author describes the teledata system of FRG from its start up to the present. In 1984 the media called Bildschirmtext (Btx) had 100 000 subseribers and 2000 data suppliers. The method and process as well as the equipment needed for the use of Btx are described. Some user survey results and the potential suppliers are analysed. Local information services, home work possibilities and some closed networks uses are discussed of the many teledata services. The information which can be announced through teledata and their suppliers are tabulated, and cost factors associated with the new media in the FRG are presented. In addition to its benefits, som drawbacks of teledata are pointed out, and the relation between teledata and professional information systems in the FRG is briefly outlined.
