Academic libraries in socialist countries for the information supply of research

Abstract

Sientific academies in the socialist countries are partly scientific bodies, partly quasiscientific ministries. They have wide networks of researh institutions. Consequently the central academic libraries have also a dual funciton: i.e. organizing and coordinaling activities concerning the library network of acedemic research institutes as well as rendering of direct information services. The central academic libraries is socialist countries are different in consequence wether they are integrated or specialized institutions. In integrated institutions the library activities and the functions of a documentation-information centre are realized in a common organization. Characteristic features of the document delivery and information supply in academic libraries are: services for basic research and interdisciplinary information. The latter is based on the current awareness of the main research tendencies of the world.
