Some remarks on the structure of the subject classification system (rubricator) of ISTIS from the viewpoint of classification theory

-Abstract
The rubricator of the International Scientific and Technical Information System of the CMEA countries (ISTIS) is a monohierarchical and practically closed classification system with an objective to accomplish comprehensive tasks in controlling the rubricators of the sectorial subsystems. One of its general contradictions is the result of this; it is impossible to solve comprehensive tasks using a monohierarchical classification system. This contradiction is worsened by several deficiencies as to classification theory i. e. by an eclectic structure reflecting aspects of both sectorial and discipline-oriented division resulting in considerable redundance, by the lack of cross-references and by the confusion of facets within the hierarchical chain, a characteristic disadvantage of loose hierarchical structures. According to experiences the development of rubricators in the individual international sectorial subsystems is not coordinated and, consequently, there is little hope for the „noiseless" retrieval and exchange of relevant documents.
