Abstract

The study aims to examine digital competences in Hungary and the 27 EU countries – both the current situation and development trends. From among individual competences it deals with basic-level computer literacy and internet use in detail. The sources of data were the regularly published surveys of Eurostat (EU's statistical office), as well as its freely available databases. Having completed a multifaceted analysis of data the author concludes that the findings related to Hungary are similar to the average of the 27 EU countries, but in some areas marked differences too can be detected. While Hungarians excel in the field of web design and programming in Europe, for example, the same is not true for computer-assisted presentations which are rather unpopular. It is a generally observed phenomenon that access to ICT tools and services at an average or higher level in a country leads to increasingly unique digital activities.
