Google vs. UDC. Information search on the web and in librarycatalogues

The article first reviews some hidden deficiencies of thepopular internet search engine, Google, which are almost unnoticeable for users. As next, it focuses on UDC as a tool widely used by libraries in subject searching. The author presents the practice how UDC notations appear in the online catalogue, and reviews the achievements of BME OMIKK in the field of searching for semantically independent parts of notations. At the same time, she also lists UDC’s shortcomings. In her view the exact implementation of UDC’s letter and spirit in the online catalogue may contribute to a better use of librarymaterials.
