-Abstract
Developing a library portal into a digital knowledge store requires the application of methods both from the library and information science field and from the information and communication technologies. However, the educational approach is also fundamental in the designing phase of the effective virtual learning environment. The digital knowledge store called EKLEKTIKA aims to fulfill three core functions: it will support the access to and use of library and information services; it will be a long-term solution for the preservation of library documents as well as digital materials which are not yet catalogued; and, via its special interface, it will be a technical tool supporting the e-learning training management systems. The primary aim of the knowledge portal is to enable users to create their own individual learning environment where they can customise and efficiently use information services and research tools. Users will be encouraged to step out of their “passive” role and to contribute actively to the building of the new digital collection. This study presents the conceptual background of the knowledge portal project through the practical issues that have come up during the designing phase.
