Abstract

The new library building at the University of Szeged did not mean just a new, modern space but also the integration of libraries. The former university library plus seventy faculty and institutional libraries have been merged. This measure implied a number of organisational changes. One of these was creating a new Department of Subject Specialists at the Library of the University of Szeged. This department is of essential importance for providing library services to the various branches of knowledge represented at the University of Szeged. The system of subject specialists helps libraries to implement services tailored to the needs of individuals and branches, and to perform a modern role in current research, communication and education. It acts as a catalyst and key component of the paradigm change during which the collection-centred library turns into a user-centred library.
