Abstract

Adaptive search systems with an association network, concept visualisation and automatic concept generation increase the effectiveness of information search. The newly developed search engine named ADVISE relies on these tools. Its development started to serve business ventures, public administration and industrial companies. In their case everyday reporting is a general requirement, consequently, they need robust computerised systems which assist simulta-neous and quick searches in various resources (data stores, databases, internet, e-mail systems, file systems etc.), and are able for automatic monitoring and reporting. The system should be adaptable with little human intervention, be able to learn and visualise. ADVISE as an adaptive system offers advantages also for those engaged in information management and for librarians, because of its capability to visualise concepts, create semantic networks and automatically set up categories. It facilitates service-provision by the actors of internet culture and those handling the mass of digitised materials. ADVISE can be integ-rated with any standardised system – the institutions are free to choose which systems they include into their special search service. ADVISE ensures authorised access as usual in the case of subscribed databases. The integration of the Web 2.0 tool IQportal and ADVISE provides complex possibilities for both librarians and users. A pilot project to introduce ADVISE in libraries has started, to test the system and tailor it to relevant needs, based on the integration of library resources.
