One alternative of providing digitised microfilms: two-layer PDF

Abstract

Some of the county libraries in Hungary have received agrant support to purchase digitised copies of the microfilms of local newspapers published atthe late 19th and early 20th centuries. The grant also covered the purchase of special softwarefor further processing the images prepared by the national library, i.e. for enabling full-textsearching, using bookmarks etc. The article reviews the main operations to be executed bythese software products, and summarises the knowledge required to perform related tasks. Asa result of the project, the grant winner institutions will be able to provide on the internet suchmaterials which have till now been accessible with difficulties and in a circumstantial wayonly.
