Abstract

The one-stage library system of the Konstanz University (FRG) means that the faculties and institutes do not have their own library; the university library, together with a branch library due to open next year, provides services not only for the students and teaching staff, but also for the users of the region. The stock of the university library consists of 1 million volumes, most of them placed on open-access shelves in systematic order. The computer-assisted data processing system, developed by Telefunken, has started in 1967. At present the alphabetical catalogue consists of 327 miaufich.es containing 3000 entries each. Online cataloguing has been running since 1978, for which the magnetic tapes of the Deutsche Bibliothek (Frankfurt am Main) are used, too. Last year, as a result of the automated lending system, the number of loans increased to 300 000 volumes.
