Abstract

The article deseribes the advances in Hungary in the recognition of the commercial character of information. The consequences of this, however, have not been drawn consistently. To reach an urgent solution of the problem, the author suggests that information services should be divided into three categories. Circulation, in-library use and reference services would remain free, while photocopying, interlibrary lending and binding services should be charged up to an upper limit. The charges for the remaining services would be completely unlimited. The fees, however, should not be too high, mainly for marketing reasons.
