Abstract

The Federation of Interpreters and Translators (Bundesverband der Dolmetscher und Übersetzer, BDÜ) was established in 1955 for safeguarding the interests of interpreters and translators. Apart from the financial interests of its members the Federation also controls the standard and quality of translations and other forms of language communication. Its aims also include education and training, the publication of professional joumals, the coordination of the activities of regional federations, the establishment and maintenance of relations with national federations and intemational organizations, the registration of translators and interpreters and making their names available for potential employers, the provision of information on relevant problems for the general public.
