Abstract

After a short review of on-line information systems, their trends and costs in Western Europe and North America, computerized information services in Hungary are outlined. Based on foreign and domestic experiences, the authors show that present conditions in Hungary make on-line connection to international information systems feasible. They point out that on-line retrieval is not as expensive as it is often believed and the technical difficulties can be overcome. After clarifying legislative and political implications as well as the user aspects of on-line retrieval systems, the authors conclude on the feasibility of international on-line connections. Showing the advantages of connections to international information networks, the authors ürge the on-line utilization of IAEA-INIS and ESA-SDS data bases in Hungary.
