VINITI, the All-Union Institute for Scientific and Technical Information: Its achievements, objects, prospect

Abstract

The Deputy Director of VINITI summarizes the historical origins of the Institute and describes its main abstracting, indexing and reviewing pubbcations. The paper presents the characteristics of the information system ASSISTENT, the main function of which is the automatic editing of abstracting and indexing publications. The first phase of the system is already in operation and provides for the editing of abstracting and indexing services (7500 publisher's sheets in 1976) as well as 20 running data bases on magnetic tapes. The paper describes the features of the four information systems operating in VINITI, provides information on passed and planned research and development as well as on the activities of VINITI in the training of specialists in scientific and technical information. The author also reports on the international relations of VINITI and on other aspects of the activities of the Institute.
