Abstract

The first part of the article deals with the term network and the motives of networking, describes library functions well-suited to a network operation, considers machine-readable data as prerequisite of networking, describes the MARC, COMARC, CONSER programs and various types of networks and their characteristics. In the second part OCLC and BALLOTS, these outstanding two networks in the US are described. The network of networks is the subject of the third part: efforts towards a national information network are outlined.
