Analytical processing of congress papers with flagged cards within the motor industry

Abstract

The introductory part describes the former manual punched card system of the Research Institute for Motor Industry. Then means used for the flagged card system in processing congress papers of Fédération Internationale de Sociétés d'Ingenieurs des Techniques de l'Automobile, FISITA /marginal punched cards with two rows of holes, coloured milton clips/, the marking and coding methods applied are presented. Marking of years is discussed in details. Elaboration of the descriptor vocabulary and the card scheme are described. Experiences justified the conclusion that a flagged card system - with its little material and personal needs - fits well for analytical processing of congress papers including also the formal criteria. The system is suitable to play the role of identification and that of the subject catalogues. It is recommended also in other subject fields for processing congress publications in smaller special libraries. The processing method described neglected the aspects of machine parts and production technologies. Their adaptation into the system could give the possibility for general use in flagged card systems of the whole vehicle induatry.
