Abstract

The history of the scientific and technical societies in Hungary illustrates that in a period when scientific and technical development requires bigger efforts the most active specialists - guided by their responsibility - organize themselves to promote progress. It so happened 100 years ago when forestry, mining, geology started their speedy development, and also after the liberation of Hungary in 1945 when rapid progress appeared in the fields of light industry, machine industry, precision engineering, and even today when computing science, organization and management are in the centre of interest .
Learned societies promoting scientific and technical development, regarded as their fundamental task to help to increase information efficiency. The Federation of Technical and Scientific Societies - just after its foundation in 1948 - actively participated in setting up documentation in Hungary, in solving problems of technical libraries and in editing the parts on science and technology of the Hungarian abridged edition of the Universal Decimal Classification.
These activities of the Federation have been continued uninterruptedly up to this time. During the past decades its oentral committees helped to develop technical propaganda. The Scientific Society of Information, established in 1968, with its specialized sections investigates theoretical and practical problems of information, strives to promote the development of information work. It disseminates - together with the other scientific societies of the Federation - the results on a large scale and takes care of their applioation in science, technology and national economy.
