New developments in UBC
Abstract
The implementation of UBC, a world-wide system of bibliographical control, is needed for libraries to supply users with relevant information rapidly and efficiently. Therefore they have to know what, where and in what form were published. In the establishment and development of UBC the most prominent roles are played by the UNESCO and IFLA.
The 1974-1975 events of UBC are:
At the beginning of 1974 an IFLA sponsored UBC Office was instituted within the British Library Reference Division. Its agenda is prepared by a Steering Committee consisting of specialists from the USSR, USA, Western Europe and developing countries as well as by an advisory committee.
April 1974. A conference was held at the Deutsche Bücherei to discuess bibliographical problems in socialist countries.
April 1974. A conference was held in the USA - sponsored by the Council of Library Resources and the National Science Foundation - on problems relating to control of national bibliographies.
September 23-27, 1974, Paris. IFLA participated with the UBC programme in the Intergovernmental Conference on the Planning of National Documentation, Library and Archives infrastructures.
February 1975. The Library Association of Singapure and Malaysia organized a conference with the financial assistance of UNESCO on the most important tasks concerning UBC in South East Asia.
Although bibliographical problems of developed and developing countries are different in level as well as in character, the UBC conception - concerning possibilities of participation - is based upon the principle of equality. The elements of the system, nationai bibliographies, services and data bases are more or less already existing in the various countries.
