Abstract

The author presents a survey on the history of UDC in Hungary. In the propagation of ODC a prominent role was played already before the First World War by Ervin Szabó. The general public of Hungarian librarians reacted first with mixed emotions, but the value of UDC was soon recognized by several experts. At the end of the 30s the UDC was already used in 25-30 major libraries.
During the last thirty years the use of UDC progressed rapidly and paralelly, the co-operation with the FID has been intensified.
Presently the UDC ia a widely accepted claasification system in Hungary, having supported the work of librarians and bibliographers very much in the past and supporting it even more in the present.
