Teaching of library use and literature at the Technical University of Budepest

Abstract

Courses in library use and literature searching were introduced already more than ten years ago. Library use is taught Ín the first year, methods of the literature searching in the higher years. In three faculties these subjects are compulsory, in other three they are optional. 779 of the students graduating in 1974 attended the courses on literature searching.The students' insufficient knowledge of foreign languages poses serious problems in the searching of foreign sources. The subject content of the courses are currently updated, the small number of hours restricts, however a more detailed instruction of new methods and processes.Seven reference books were issued for this training including data and location of about 10 000 information sources, various samples of literature searches and basic knowledge on libraries. An educational film of 25 minutes illustrating library use and a set of 70 slides demonstrating the process of literature searching have been prepared to back up the courses.
