Introduction of the International Standard Book Number (ISBN) in Hungary

Abstract

Description of the concept, development and system of ISBN, its sphere of application, use and utilization. International (ISO) and Hungarian standards published in this subject are dealt with in details, publications not covered by the Hungarian standard are listed. The inauguration of ISBN in Hungary has taken place since the 1st of January 1974. ISBN numbers are given in the first place to publications issued by publishers. Then those companies and institutes will be included where - beside their other activities - regular publication programme is carried out. The Hungarian office of ISBN is working within the frame of National Széchenyi Library. The organizational work conceming full introduction of ISBN in Hungary is performed here.
