Magnetic tape information services for foreign special literature in Hungary

Abstract

The information of special literature has significantly been developed during the last ten years, as to its methods and appliances. The considerably increased base of special literature together with the increasing differentiation of the demands required to introduce such methods and appliances which could increase the promptness and selectivity of information services. By using computers and magnetic tapes, orientated selective information services have been organized in a number of special fields. From the well-known magnetic tape services of CAC, INSPEC, METADEX, MEDLARS and INIS in English the magnetic tapes of the systems of CAC and INSPEC are now available to Hungarian R&D experts of chemics and chemical industry, physics, electrical and electronic engineering and computing technique. The continuous supply of the services is provided by the Central Library of Veszprém Chemical University, which ordered the services, and by the library of Central Research Institute for Physics of Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Results of these information services are very promising, therefore an increasing number of experts concerned are to ba drawn into the use of the services in the future. Both the organized work of services and the retrieval programme for the ICL 1906 type computer properly provide a systematic circulation of arriving magnetic tapes and formulation in English of the topics in such a way that it can be suitable for retrieval with the aid of a computer. Since the interest in the selective magnetic tape information services in foreign languages will probably increase in the future, it is necessary to purchase the computers required and to cover their costs. It is also necessary to consider the ordering of magnetic tape services for special fields other than CAC and INSPEC. The soope of services used in the national information system can be completed by the application of these services.
