Plans for implementation of the UNISIST programme

Abstract

Two and six years programmes for implementation of UNISIST will be approved by the next General Conference of UNESCO in October 1972. These programmes have been planned on the basis of the resolutions of the Intergovernmental Conference for the Establishment of a World Science Information System (UNISIST) held in 1971.
The plans for gradual implementation could be arranged in five main groups:
1. Improving tools of system interconnection. E.g.: World inventory of information services; Establishment of a world network of interconnected referral services; Unification of bibliographical descriptions; Support to conversion programmes; Establishment of an international coding system for periodical titles, etc.
2. Improving information transfer. E.g.: Study on the effectiveness of information transfer; Co-ordinating programmes; Elaboration of programmes of action; etc.
3. Developing specialized information manpower. E.G.: Greation of a UNISIST Training Centre for information specialists; Assistance to international training-centres; Publication of guidelines, curriculum material and handbooks for eduction; etc.
4. Developing scientific information policy and national networks. E.g.: Development guidelines for UNESCO Member States; Support the creation of national co-ordinating agencies; Reduction of barriers in information transfer; etc.
5. Assistance to developing countries. E.g.: Investigation of national requirements; Planning and advise on the establishment of information services; Design and realization of pilot projects; Co-ordination of assistance programmes; etc.
