Abstract

Author provides a survey of the aims of the National Information System for Science and Technology (NISSAT) to be established by the government of India within the framcs of its scientific-technical development programme. National information centres occupy the highest level of the NISSAT. Regional information centres will be organized on the next level, while the third level is represented by sectional (branch) information centres and systems. Finally, local information units are situated on the lowest level of the nationai system. Having been fully developed, NISSAT will serve as a firm information infrastructure, and will thus enable to meet information demand in a most effective, economical and expeditious manner on the one hand and to link India with international and other information systems on the other.
