Abstract

Text of the paper presented at the UNESCO Seminar on Selective Dissemination of Information, Budapest, 4-9 August, 1975.
Ideas on development of the Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI) services start from the specific features of the service. In the future SDI will be the most important, but not only form of current awareness services, because of the changes having happened in information producing and use. The development SDI requires relatively complete data bases, while this latter one requires international co-ordination in produoting data bases, the interconnection of systems dealing with dissemination of information and the existence of transmitter information systems at the users. The main fields of development according to the contents of the data bases are the enlargement of the variety of information sources to be processed and the standardization of their data elements. The most important development problem of SDI in processing and dissemination of information is the use of proper search languages. Besides or instead of the nowadays most frequently used free term search the combined use of a shallow hierarchical classification, functioning to group larger blocks of information, and of special thesauri seems to be one possible way of development. Development of SDI requires the solution of some organizational and a lot of legal - primarily copyright - problema especially according to the dissemination of primary documents.
